A Night Out in Mexico City: How to Plan the Whole Evening

Sunset on a rooftop, tacos at 10, a vinyl bar at midnight, a club at two. Three ready-made evenings in Roma, Juárez and the Centro Histórico.
Mexico City runs late. A good night starts on a rooftop around seven, eats at ten, moves to a bar at eleven, and only reaches a club after one. Trying to do it on northern European hours is the most common mistake visitors make.

The shape of the night

Three routes
Roma Norte: the easy one
Sunset at Balmori Roofbar or Supra Roma, mezcal at Tlécan, dinner in Roma, then Café de Nadie for records and negronis. If you're still going, Bar Oriente or Departamento until late. Everything in this route is walkable.
Juárez: cocktails and clubs
Start with a drink at Handshake, one of the world's most awarded cocktail bars, if you booked ahead. If not, Cananea for a dive bar, a jukebox and a pool table, or Sorbo for natural wine. Then Loo Loo or [sic] for the dancing.
Centro Histórico: the old city
Sunset over the Zócalo from La Terraza at the Gran Hotel or Miralto on the 40th floor of the Torre Latino. A tequila at La Casa de las Sirenas or a beer at La Opera, a 19th-century cantina. Then Club Amok or, on a Sunday, the rooftop party at Sunday Sunday.
Practical rules
- Book the rooftops and the famous cocktail bars. Thursday to Saturday they fill.
- Eat properly before midnight. Restaurants stop seating earlier than the bars suggest.
- Carry cash for cantinas and taco stands, cards for everything else.
- Use Uber or DiDi late, not street taxis, and wait inside the venue.
- Dress up a little for Polanco and the hotel rooftops, not at all for Roma or a warehouse.
- Sundays are real here. Some of the best parties are Sunday afternoon into the evening.
