The Remote Worker's Guide to Mexico City (2026)

Mexico City is one of the easiest big cities in the world to work remotely from. The best base for most people is Roma Norte or Condesa, where a furnished one-bedroom runs roughly $1,100–$1,800 USD a month and a coworking desk $150–$300 USD. Most visitors can stay up to 180 days on a tourist permit, and longer stays need a temporary resident visa.

1. Choose your neighborhood

Most remote workers end up in one of three neighborhoods. Each suits a different person.

Juárez, Narvarte, Del Valle and the Centro Histórico are good alternatives. They are cheaper, less crowded with foreigners, and often closer to the Mexico City most visitors never see.

2. Choose how you'll live

There are four main options, and they trade price against privacy and community.

• —Airbnb or furnished rental. This gives you the most privacy but the least community. Monthly discounts are common. Check the host is registered with the city, as short-term rental rules have tightened since 2024.
• —Coliving. You get a private room, sometimes with its own bathroom, plus shared kitchens, workspace and events. Prices in central neighborhoods run roughly 9,000–18,000 MXN ($500–$1,000 USD) a month, usually all-inclusive. • —Aparthotels and serviced apartments. These are hotel-style buildings with kitchens, cleaning and a front desk. They cost more than coliving and offer less community.
• —Long-term lease. This is the cheapest option per month, but usually needs a Mexican guarantor (aval) or a large deposit, plus a 12-month commitment. It only makes sense if you're staying a year.

3. Choose where you'll work

Home wifi in central Mexico City is generally good. Most people still want a desk outside the apartment a few days a week.

4. Know how long you can stay

Mexico has no dedicated digital nomad visa. The basics:

• —Tourist permit (FMM): up to 180 days, but the immigration officer decides how many days you get. Ask for the full stay politely and carry proof of onward travel and accommodation.
• —Temporary resident visa: one to four years. You apply at a Mexican consulate before you travel. The 2026 thresholds are roughly $4,400 USD monthly income or about $74,000 USD in savings.

5. A typical monthly budget

For one person living centrally, in USD:

• —Housing: $600–$1,000 in coliving, or $1,100–$1,800 for a furnished one-bedroom.
• —Coworking: $150–$300 for a monthly hot desk.
• —Food: mostly covered by a daily comida corrida (set lunch), which remains one of the city's great bargains.
• —Transport: metro and Metrobús are very cheap, and ride-hailing is widely used.

Treat these as planning ranges, not quotes. Prices move, especially in Roma and Condesa.
